The San Diego State men's golf team is two strokes out of first place after the first 18 holes of the 2010 Mountain West Conference Championships Thursday at the par-71, 7,144-yard OMNI Tucson National Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz. The 31st-ranked Aztecs shot a first-round 1-over 285 to trail day one leader No. 35 Colorado State, which was the only team to finish under par at 1-under 283.
SDSU had three golfers tie for fifth place, just one stroke off the lead, with first-round even-par 71s. Aztec freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England), sophomore J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) and junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) all logged five birdies apiece to open the league tournament. Berry was at 1-over through the first nine holes, but fired birdies on the 10th, 15th and 18th holes to end up with a 71. Carlsson, meanwhile, posted four of his five birdies on the day on consecutive holes (14-17) and Spaun had four of his five over a six-hole span on the back nine.
Redshirt sophomore Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) and sophomore Andrew Cooley (New Haw, England) are one and two strokes in back of the trio, tying for 12th and 18th place respectively in the 45-golfer field.
Four golfers, including two from Colorado State and one each from BYU and UNLV, are currently tied for the individual lead at 1-under 70.
San Diego State, which is seeking its first-ever MWC title, will be paired with Colorado State and BYU for Friday's second round starting at 8:40 a.m. MST from the first hole. Live results are available on goaztecs.com and golfstat.com.
