NCAA Central Regional - First Round Results in PDF Format
San Diego State sophomore Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) is tied for fourth place out of 123 golfers after the first round of the NCAA Central Regional Thursday at the par-72, 6,417-yard Otter Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Ind. Enarsson posted an even-par 72 to put her in a four-way tie for fourth place as the Aztecs, making their first NCAA regional appearance in six years, are currently in 17th place with a 31-over 319.
Despite a two-week break after her last tournament, Enarsson continued her strong play with five birdies, matching as the most by a player in the first round. She also is tied for first in the field in par 5 scoring at 2-under and is second in par 4 scoring at 1-under. Enarsson was even through the first nine holes and 2-under with three holes remaining, but then logged back-to-back bogeys to finish out the day with a 72. The sophomore is the only golfer who entered the tournament not ranked among the top 100 nationally to currently be in the top seven on the individual leaderboard.
Enarsson is the only Aztec in the top 65, as freshman Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) was next best at 9-over to tie for 69th place. Junior Stephanie Arcala (Oceanside, Calif.) is one stroke behind her in a tie for 79th with an 82, while both freshman Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) and junior Samantha Roberts (Carlsbad, Calif.) are tied for 94th at 12-over 84.
Defending national champion and second-ranked Arizona State is in first place by two strokes over fellow Pac-10 member and No. 5 USC with an opening round 9-over 297. Purdue's Thea Hoffmeister and Oregon's Kendra Little are tied for the individual lead at 2-under 70, while ASU's Juliana Murcia is the only other golfer to break par in third place at 1-under 71.
The top eight teams and the low two individuals not on those teams from each of three regionals played concurrently this week will advance to the NCAA national championships at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C., May 18-21.
San Diego State, which is only nine strokes out of the top 10, will be paired again with Baylor and Tulsa for Friday's second round, beginning from the first hole at 8 a.m. ET. Live results are available on goaztecs.com, as well as golfstat.com.
