Aztec Baseball Season Ends With 16-8 Loss To BYU

SAN DIEGO - Brigham Young scored six runs over the first three innings then had a pair of big innings late in the contest en route to a 16-8 win over San Diego State at the Mountain West Conference Wednesday afternoon. With the loss the Aztecs were eliminated from tourney action and end their 2010 season with a 28-28 record.

BYU scored two runs in each of the opening three frames against SDSU starting pitcher Corey Black. The freshman right-hander would last only 2.2 innings as he was touched up for nine hits while walking two and striking out four. He would eventually be charged with the loss to even his record at 2-2.

Cougar starter Mark Anderson, meanwhile, he the Aztec at in the early going thanks in part to double plays in the first and fourth frames that ended potential SDSU threats. He would end up tossing six innings allowing four runs on six hits with three walks and four strikeouts while picking up the win to improve to 3-1 on the season.

San Diego State finally broke through with a pair of runs in the sixth when Jomel Torres and Mitch Blackburn walked and singled respectively and scored on a throwing error by BYU shortstop Brandon Relf on Brandon Meredith's ground ball.

Brigham Young (26-30) responded immediately with four runs on pair of double and three singles to take a 10-2 lead, but the home side answered with five of its own in the bottom of the frame.

Josh Chasse led off the rally with a solo home run, his third of the season. The Aztecs also got an RBI single from Torres and capped off the rally with a three-run home run to left by to make it a 10-7 contest.

Any hope the Aztecs had of completing their comeback, were short-lived, however, as BYU six unearned runs in the ninth to put the game away. Those runs came on five hits, a walk two SDSU miscues.

San Diego State added its final run in the bottom of the ninth on a solo home run by Meredith, who finished the day with a pair of hits, a run scored and two runs batted in.

Seniors Josh Chasse and Mitch Blackburn concluded their Aztecs careers with fine offensive performances. Chasse had four hits including the home run while Blackburn recorded three hits with a homer, two runs scored and three RBI.

Cory Vaughn ended the year with two hits to extend his hitting streak to 20 games while senior Brandon Decker also chipped in with two singles and a run scored.
