Oregon, California, Tennessee and UNLV are in a four-way tie for first place at 6-over 294 following the first day of the 2010 NCAA Men's Golf San Diego Regional Thursday at the par-72, 7,360-yard Carlton Oaks Golf Club. Host San Diego State is tied for 10th place with a first-round 16-over 304 with 36 holes still left to play to qualify for next month's national championships.
UNLV's Eddie Olson leads the 75-player field in the individual race with an opening effort of 4-under 68, one stroke better than Timothy Madigan of New Mexico State, who shot a 69. Only four other golfers are currently under par with the average round one score being nearly 4-over par.
San Diego State was led by junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), who posted a 3-over 75 to tie for 25th place. Teammates sophomore Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) and freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England), both making their NCAA debuts, are only a stroke back at 4-over 76, but are currently tied for 40th place.
Aztec sophomore J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) is tied for 51st place after carding a 77, while classmate Andrew Cooley (New Haw, England) is tied for 60th at 6-over 78.
"It was a tough day for the Aztecs," said SDSU head coach Ryan Donovan. "We didn't stay disciplined enough and it's a tough golf course. The good news is that there are two more days to go."
Teams will begin teeing off for Friday's second round beginning at 8 a.m. PT. The Aztecs will start from the 10th hole at 8:50 a.m.

On the team's round:
"It was a tough day for the Aztecs. We didn't stay disciplined enough and it's a tough golf course. The good news is that there are two more days to go."
On the team's strategy going into today:
"We talked about playing the percentages and if you get into trouble, make sure you get out and accept the bogey on this type of golf course. We seemed to try to save some shots out there, which ended up with some doubles (bogeys) and even a triple bogey, which adds up fast."
On what he will tell his players tomorrow:
"We're still going to keep our confidence level high and we know we can put up two good numbers the next couple of days. That's what we're going to expect to do. We just put ourselves behind the eight-ball a little bit, but I believe in these guys and we'll go back to being disciplined tomorrow."
San Diego State junior Johan Carlsson:
On how he played today:
"I think I played pretty well today, just didn't get the ball in the hole, basically. It's hard out there - there's a lot of wind, so you've got to stay patient. Overall, I played well, just didn't post the score that I wanted. As a team, we can definitely do better."
On if he sees the glass as half full with two more days left to make up ground:
"That's how you have to see it. We're tied for 10th and that's not where we want to be. We definitely think we're good enough to be in the top five. We just need to go out there and post a low number tomorrow and the next day.
On what he will tell his teammates for tomorrow:
"Be patient - that's the No. 1 thing we've been working with - and just play the percentages. Don't be too aggressive, because it's just going to come to you if you be patient."
Oregon Head Coach Casey Martin
On how the round went for his team:
"You know the round was kinda up and down for us. We started off great and then we really struggled and then brought it back. It was a tough finish on 18 and it's probably just indicative of the really hard holes and where they're situated. We didn't play the par 5 (holes) particularly well, but we can improve on that - that will help our cause. But overall, we're going to be somewhere around the lead - not too far away. It's a long tournament and we are in a decent position."
On the golf course:
"The golf course is very difficult. It's a very good golf course. They set it up (well) today. They didn't make it too long like the practice round, so it was fair but very, very challenging and it's going to get a lot tougher, so we're going to have to play that much better."
