Box Score

PROVO, Utah - Brigham Young scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to break open a close high-scoring contest as it defeated San Diego State, 16-10, to complete a three-game sweep of the Aztecs at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo. The loss completed a tough weekend for the Aztecs, who dropped Thursday's contest after holding a two-run lead in the 10th inning then lost starting pitcher Bryan Crabb during Friday's loss when he was hit in the head by a line drive in the second inning.

Over the first seven innings on Saturday the teams managed to stay within a run or two of each other despite the non-stop scoring by both sides. San Diego State (25-26, 10-11 MWC) never trailed in the game until the fateful eighth inning when BYU had its offensive outburst.

At the end of three innings the score was tied at 2-2. At the end of six the Aztecs held a 10-9 lead, but had never accumulated more than a two-run advantage at any time. The Cougars (23-27, 10-11 MWC) erased with SDSU's one-run lead run in the seventh to make it a 10-10 game.

That score line lasted just one inning as Brigham Young scored six runs on five singles and a pair of walks in the eighth. Five of those runs were scored with two out as the Cougars got to SDSU relievers Ryan Wynveen and John Pecoraro for three runs apiece. Wynveen would be saddled with the loss and see his record fall to 1-3 on the season.

For BYU, reliever Kevin Sloan came on in the sixth to put an end to SDSU's two-run rally in that frame. He went on to toss a total of 2.2 innings, allowing no runs on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts as he was credited with the win to improve to 9-0 (all in relief). Closer David McKnight came on in the ninth and retired the side in order to nail down the victory.

For the Aztecs, Jomel Torres (two runs, two RBI) and Matt Parker (run, three RBI) finished with three hits each with Parker's double in the fourth and a triple by Josh Chasse in the fifth being the only extra-base hits of the 16 recorded by SDSU in the contest.

Cory Vaughn had a pair of hits with two runs batted in as he extended his current hitting streak to 16 games while Brandon Meredith also had two singles for his team-leading 21st multiple-hit game of the year. In addition, Ryan O'Sullivan and Blair Moore each scored twice and had two hits.

San Diego State will wrap up its 2010 regular season with a three-game Mountain West Conference series against UNLV that gets underway on Thursday, May 20, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
