Beasley (23-7) limited UNLV, which came into the game with the 15th-highest batting average (.323) in the country, to three singles, including two infield hits. She had 11 strikeouts, her 12th double-digit strikeout game of the season and 21st of her career, and no walks over seven innings. Beasley ran into a jam in the top of the third inning when pitcher Kylie Wagner (fielding error) and Paige Emerson (single) each reached base with no outs. The right-hander, however, struck out the Rebels' 1-2-3 hitters (Marissa Nichols, Tara Bendt and Jaci Hull) in succession to end the threat. After being held scoreless by Wagner (10-5) through the first four innings, SDSU finally broke through for a run in the fifth thanks to a pair of pinch hits by redshirt junior Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) and freshman Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.). Marquez led off the frame with a bunt single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior Jen Wisneski. May then blooped a double down the left field line to score Marquez with the game-winning run. San Diego State tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth, both with two outs. Sophomore Ashley Rose (Antioch, Calif.) singled home redshirt freshman pinch runner Roshana Lavery with the team's second run before a single by Wisneski plated freshman Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) with the final score of the game. Rose was 1-for-1 with an RBI and a walk to pace the Aztecs, who improved to 26-1 this season when outhitting their opponents. Junior Eva Sahatdjian (Fresno, Calif.) and sophomore Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS/Cal State Bakersfield) each reached twice (single and hit by pitch) in three plate appearances. SDSU plays host to UNLV once again tomorrow at 1 p.m. PT. San Diego State 3, UNLV 0 |
