PROVO, Utah - The San Diego State softball team left eight runners on base in a 4-0 loss at Brigham Young Saturday afternoon in Provo, Utah. The Aztecs, who defeated the Cougars (31-10, 6-2 Mountain West Conference), 9-4, yesterday at Gail Miller Field, dropped to 27-12 on the season and 5-2 in the MWC.
BYU's Delaney Willard was responsible for all four of its runs with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning and an RBI triple in the sixth.
Junior Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) (22-7) had her career-long nine-game winning streak snapped in SDSU's loss. For the game, the right-hander allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and a walk. She had seven strikeouts.
The San Diego State offense was held in check by Brigham Young pitcher Paige Affleck. The Aztecs managed just five singles off Affleck, but did reach base via five walks.
Sophomore Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) and junior Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) each had a hit and a walk, while sophomore Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS/Cal State Bakersfield) drew two walks.
SDSU's best chance to score came in the fifth when it loaded the bases with two outs on a walk (junior Traci Wolf (Lancaster, Calif.)) and back-to-back singles (Reifschneider and Camello). Affleck got out of the inning, however, after senior Brittany Knudsen's (San Diego/Escondido HS) fielder's choice got Camello out at second base.
San Diego State begins a five-game homestand Saturday (May 1) against UNLV at 1 p.m. PT.
