SAN DIEGO - San Diego State got offensive contributions from throughout the lineup along with solid starting pitching performances from a pair of freshmen as it swept a doubleheader from Wagner Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium. SDSU spread the offense around throughout the day as eight of nine starters hit safely in each contest while a total of 10 Aztecs accounted for at least one RBI over the two games.
With the 7-2 and 12-1 victories, the Aztecs evened their record at 20-20. Wagner, meanwhile, fell to 16-18 on the year.
On the offensive side, center fielder Josh Chasse went 5-for-8 over the two games with a double, three runs scored and three RBI. Right fielder Brandon Decker was 4-for-7 with two runs and two RBI while teammate Jordan Van Hoosier also had four hits during the twin bill including a double in each contest.
SDSU infielder Mitch Blackburn finished with a pair of singles and a double on the day as he extended his current hitting streak to 19 games. In addition, freshman Albert Alvarez, who got the start at second base in game two, collected his first two hits of the year along with an RBI.
On the mound in the opener, freshman Bryan Crabb tossed eight innings of shutout ball, allowing five hits and a walk with five strikeouts. The first-year Aztec from Coronado High picked up the win to improve to 4-3 while lowering his season earned run average to 2.40.
San Diego State opened the scoring in the game with a pair of runs in the second inning courtesy of a two-RBI double by Matt Parker that scored Blair Moore and Chris Wilson who had reached on an error and single respectively. That lead was extended to 6-0 two innings later thanks to an RBI double by Chasse, run-scoring singles from Decker and Jomel Torres, plus a safety squeeze by Van Hoosier. Torres drove in SDSU's seventh run in the bottom of the sixth with another RBI single.
Six of SDSU's seven runs came against Wagner starting pitcher Mark Holmes (1-1), who went five innings and allowed 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout. The Seahawks avoided the shutout with a pair of unearned runs in the final frame on three hits and an Aztec miscue in the outfield.
The second game saw frosh right-hander Corey Black allow no runs on three hits over 7.1 innings as he picked up his first win of the year in his third start of the season. Along the way he struck out nine Seahawk batters to equal his season high in that category.
Black's teammates gave him plenty of run support although it was a while in coming. After scoring a single marker in the opening frame on back-to-back doubles by Van Hoosier and Blackburn, it remained a one-run game until the Aztecs tacked on 11 more runs from the fifth through eighth innings to take control of the contest. Their three runs in the fifth chased Wagner starter Ryan Van Spronsen, who took the loss to fall to 2-5 on the year.
San Diego State and Wagner will conclude their four-game series with a single game on Sunday, April 25, at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The start time of that contest has been moved to 10:00 a.m. due to the Seahawks' travel plans back to New York.
