SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team defeated UNLV, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center in the regular-season finale. The Aztecs closed out Mountain West Conference play with a 5-1 record and will be the second seed at the conference tournament on Wednesday.
With the victory, San Diego State closed the season by winning seven of their final eight matches and went 9-2 over their final 11 duals of the campaign.
Saturday, UNLV won the doubles point by virtue of victories at number one and three doubles. The lone Aztec win came when senior Juan Gomez and sophomore Luis Rattenhuber were 8-3 winners at number two.
San Diego State stormed back, winning the first three singles matches. Gomez tied the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at number one singles. Junior Andre Feliz put the Aztecs up for good with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at number six. Junior Tim Schulz van Endert gave San Diego State its third team point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at number five singles.
UNLV pulled back to within 3-2 with Johannes Markel pulling out a three-set win at number four singles.
San Diego State clinched the match with senior Achim Vladimirschii (SDSU) posting a 7-5, 6-2 victory at number two singles. The Rebels won a three-set affair at number three singles to provide the final margin.
San Diego State improved to 11-12 overall and 5-1 in league play, while the Rebels fell to 12-11 and 2-4 in conference.
