SAN DIEGO - Junior Julia Trunk and freshman Alicia Aguilar claimed thrilling three-set victories in singles play to help lead the San Diego State women's tennis team to a 5-2 victory over San Diego at the Aztec Tennis Center Monday night.

Aguilar, ranked 91st nationally, clinched the match for the Aztecs when she overcame a one-set deficit and three-game disadvantage in the third set to post a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory at number two singles. Trailing 3-0 in the third, Aguilar won five straight games en route to the win. Minutes later, Trunk, ranked 56th nationally, closed out the match with a 6-2, 6-7, 6-0 victory at number one singles. The junior won six straight games in the third set after dropping the second-set tiebreaker.

San Diego State took a 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point behind the strength of the number two and three units. Aguilar and Olivia Colman defeated Laura Claus and Justine Perl, 8-3, at number three doubles and Trunk and Julia Wais teamed-up to dispose of Alexander Demidova and Marite Raygada, 8-2, at number two doubles.

The teams split four straight set singles matches, with the Aztecs building a 3- 0 team advantage behind Wais and Sierra Ellison at numbers three and four, respectively. San Diego got on the board by taking the next two singles matches to end. The Toreros got a 6-1, 6-2 victory from Raygada at number six singles and a 7-6, 6-2 victory at number five singles from Demidova to close within 3-2.

That left the fate of the match in the two singles matches at the top of the lineup, where San Diego State's two nationally-ranked singles players lifted the Aztecs to the three-point win.

San Diego State is 12-10 overall, while San Diego is 11-11. The Aztecs will now get ready for the Mountain West Conference championships in Las Vegas. The tournament begins on April 28th, with the Aztecs scheduled to start play on April 29th.
