SAN DIEGO - San Diego State water polo freshman Amber Pezzolla has been named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mikasa Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday evening. With the announcement, the first-year utility becomes the first Aztec to win the award in school history.

The San Dimas, Calif., native helped SDSU upset No. 9 Arizona State in Tempe this past weekend with a solid all-around effort. The MPSF's freshman leading scorer posted two goals and logged her 15th multiple-goal performance of the season. Additionally, Pezzolla also dished out a team-best three assists, while tallying three steals, the second-highest figure on the team.

After beating the Sun Devils for the fourth consecutive time, the Aztecs returned to the pool to take on No. 15 Indiana in a neutral-site contest. The Bonita High School product recorded one assist, one steal and drew a team-best three ejections against the Hoosiers.

For the week, Pezzolla accumulated two goals, four assists and four steals to add to her team-leading totals in all three categories. Through 32 games, all of which have resulted in Pezzolla starts, the freshman has 51 goals, 43 assists and 72 steals.

Pezzolla and the Aztecs will be back in action this Friday when they travel to UC San Diego for the ninth-annual Harper Cup game. SDSU, which is 8-0 in Harper Cup outings, and UCSD are set to battle for the Cup at 6 p.m. PT.
