BRYAN, Texas - The San Diego State men's golf team finished fourth at its final tournament prior to next month's conference championships Sunday at the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas. The No. 30 Aztecs posted a final round 369 to end up five strokes better than seventh-ranked Texas with a two-day total of 7-over 1087 at the par-72, 7,146-yard Traditions Golf Club.
SDSU freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England) was in a three-way tie for first place through 36 holes, but carded a 2-over 74 to finish up in a respectable eighth place at 4-under 212, matching his career low. It was Berry's sixth top-10 individual performance of the season and he was eight strokes better than any other Aztec at the Aggie Invite.
Sophomore J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) moved from 41st to 36th after his tournament-best 72, including three birdies, to end up at 4-over 220. Junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and sophomore Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) continued to post matching rounds, as each had a 4-over 76 to tie for 38th place.
SDSU sophomore Andrew Cooley (New Haw, England) fired the team's best 18 holes of the day at 1-under 71 with 17 pars and a birdie on the par-4 fourth hole. Cooley, who started the event with an 8-over 80, moved into a tie for 50th place at 7-over 223. Sophomore Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) and Tyler Morris (Encinitas, Calif.) both posted final round 79s to tie for 57th and 78th respectively.
Sixth-ranked and tournament host Texas A&M not only dominated the team race, winning by 21 strokes over top-ranked Oklahoma State, but also had the top four golfers, including medalist Jordan Russell, who posted a final round 67 en route to a 10-under 206.
San Diego State will have two weeks off before heading to Tucson, Ariz., May 6-8, for the 2010 Mountain West Conference championships at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club.
