SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team recorded victories in all five races in which it competed against Loyola Marymount and St. Mary's during the first day of the annual NorCal/SoCal Challenge. The two day event is being contested at the Port of Sacramento on northern California this weekend.
In the morning races against Loyola Marymount, the Aztec Varsity Eight boat turned in a time of 8:00.48 over the 2000-yard course to win by over 10 seconds. That entry was crewed by Tanya Ochoa (coxswain), Casi Boyle (stroke), Jaime Hinton (seven), Anna Ohrstrom (six), Leslie Martz (five), Paige Funk (four), Kristin Guissanie (three), Christina Mattos (two) and Lauren Bischoff (bow).
The Second Varsity Eight boat also won its race, but by a much closer margin as it edged the Lions' entry by less than a second. The SDSU rowers in that event included Vanessa Jones (coxswain), Michelle Boyer (stroke), Julie Moyer (seven), Stefanie Krach (six), Alyson Boyd (five), Mallory Scarpello (four), Jessica Teora (three), Kayla McKenna (two) and Darian Kimball (bow).
In the Varsity Four category, the Aztec quartet of Emma Peck (coxswain), Christina Mattos (stroke), Ali Schroeder (three), Angela Strohbeck (two) and Leslie Martz (bow) recorded a 15-second victory over LMU.
In the after competition, SDSU competed against St. Mary's in a pair of races beginning with the Varsity Eight, which won the event in 6:41.48 with the Gaels' boat coming in half a minute later. The Aztec Second Varsity Eight also competed in that race, finishing in 6:53.65.
San Diego State's Novice Eight boat (7:03.36) then defeated its St. Mary's counterpart (7:37.44) by over half a minute. That crew consisted of Marissa Caldarella (coxswain), Angela Strohbeck (stroke), Caelie Fish (seven), Katie Sanders (six), Romaine Desclos (five), Kirsten Atkinson (four), Sara Bresse (three), Morgan Gleason (two) and Natalie Marroquin (bow).
SDSU will complete action at the NorCal-SoCal Challenge on Sunday when it faces UC Davis in three races beginning at 8:00 a.m.
