BRYAN, Texas - Yet another Aztec underclassman has found his way to the top of the leaderboard, as San Diego State freshman golfer Tom Berry (New Haw, England) is in a three-way tie for first place Saturday at 6-under 138 through 36 holes at the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas. Berry has helped No. 30 SDSU to a fourth-place spot in the team standings with a 2-under 718 at the par-72, 7,146-yard Traditions Golf Club.

Berry opened the tournament with a 2-under 70 with six birdies, before coming back in the afternoon to match his career-low with a 4-under 68, highlighted by seven birdies, including three straight to open the second round. His 68 moved him from seventh all the way to first, where he is tied with Texas A&M's Geoff Shaw and Oklahoma State's Jeff Tway.

Aztec junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and sophomore Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) are both tied for 22nd place with a 1-over 145. Carlsson had 15 pars and one birdie in his first 18 holes, before notching four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 third hole in the afternoon. Featherstone, meanwhile, combined for eight birdies on the day and flip flopped scores with Carlsson, posting consecutive rounds of 71 and 74.

SDSU sophomore Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) was tied by Berry for seventh through the first 18 holes, but then found some trouble beginning with his fifth hole of the second round, posting a double-bogey which was followed by a birdie, three pars, four bogeys and a double bogey on his next nine holes to wind up with a second-round 77. Kang is currently tied for 34th at 3-over 147.

Classmate J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) also started strong with a 71, but then had a 77 in the afternoon to put him in a tie for 41st, while another sophomore Andrew Cooley (New Haw, England) rounds out the starting six in 57th with a 152.

Aztec sophomore Tyler Morris (Encinitas, Calif.), who is playing as an individual, is in 78th place with a 36-hole score of 19-over 163.

Sixth-ranked and tournament host Texas A&M leads the field by a wide margin at 23-under 697, which is 15 strokes better than top-ranked Oklahoma State, which is in second place out of 12 teams.

San Diego State will close out the Aggie Invitational Sunday with the third and final round getting underway at 7:30 a.m. CT. Live results are available on goaztecs.com and golfstat.com.
