PROVO, Utah - San Diego State's five-match winning streak came to an end on Friday as the Aztec men's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss at Brigham Young.
The Aztecs, ranked 56th nationally, scored the doubles point and built a 3-1 lead, before the 35th-ranked Cougars won the final three points of the match to claim the meeting between the only two remaining teams that entered the day unbeaten in Mountain West Conference play.
The Aztecs won the top two doubles matches to claim the first point of the match. San Diego State received straight set singles wins from Juan Gomez at number two singles and Tim Schulz van Endert at number six singles. The Cougars won the other three singles matches in straight sets, leaving the decision to number four singles. Luis Rattenhuber, who clinched a pair of 4-3 victories for the Aztecs last week, was unable to duplicate the result. BYU's Cassidy Mears closed out the match with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Rattenhuber.
Brigham Young improved to 19-5 overall and 4-0 in league play. The Aztecs, which have now seven of their last nine matches, are 9-12 overall and 3-1 in conference play. San Diego State wraps up its trip to the Beehive State on Saturday with a match at Utah.
