SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team won all six singles matches to coast to a 6-1 victory over Colorado State on Thursday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Aztecs played singles without 91st-ranked Alicia Aguilar, but still cruised to their season-best third consecutive victory. San Diego State improved to 10-9 overall and 3-3 in Mountain West Conference play, while Colorado State is now 6-12 overall and 1-5 in league play.
The Rams got on the scoreboard first, winning doubles matches at number three and number one to earn the first point of the match.
The lead was short lived, as San Diego State responded with quick wins at the top of the lineup. Freshman Julia Wais, playing a position up at number two singles, dropped just one game in recording a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The reigning Mountain West Conference Co-Player of the Week, 56th-ranked Julia Trunk posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory at number one singles to put the Aztecs up, 2-1.
Earlier, Trunk and Wais teamed up to give San Diego State its only victory in doubles and both ended the day with perfect records in the match.
The Aztecs secured the match victory with another pair of straight-set victories. At number six singles, junior Olivia Colman was a 6-3, 6-3 winner and sophomore Emma Cioffi followed that up with a 6-2, 7-6 victory at number five singles.
San Diego State swept singles play by winning a pair of third set 10-point tiebreakers. At number three, Roxanne Ellison was a 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) victor over CSU's Caitlin Fluegge. Minutes later, sophomore Sierra Ellison completed her rally at number four singles, pulling out a 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5) win over Melissa Holzinger.
Thursday was the first of three consecutive days in which the Aztec women's tennis team is in action. Tomorrow, SDSU will face Wyoming at the Aztec Tennis Center. First serve is set for 2 p.m. PT and admission is free.
