Final Tournament Results in PDF Format
The No. 33 San Diego State men's golf team finished ahead of five top 15 schools, including No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Washington and No. 4 UCLA, en route to a second-place performance Tuesday at the 54-hole U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. The Aztecs posted a final round 280 to end the event only three strokes in back of tournament champion and sixth-ranked Oregon with a three-day total of 2-over 842.
Aztec sophomore J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) followed up his victory at the Thunderbird Invitational on April 3, with another impressive performance against some of the nation's elite golfers. Spaun finished in a three-way tie for third place with a 4-under 206, including a final round 69, and was only one stroke out of second. He completed the U.S. Intercollegiate with three consecutive sub-70 rounds and carded 11 birdies and 36 pars. Spaun has been under par in eight of his last nine rounds spanning three tournaments.
SDSU freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England) notched a career-low 2-over 212 to tie for 19th place after offsetting a triple bogey on the par-3 third hole with four birdies for a final-round 72. Sophomore Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) was the third Aztec in the top 30, moving up six slots on the individual leaderboard with his second consecutive 71 to tie for 29th place at 4-over 214.
Sophomore Andrew Cooley (New Haw, England) ended up only one stroke behind Kang with a 5-over 215 to tie for 31st place, firing his second eagle of the tournament on his final hole of the day. Junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) rounded out the Aztec contingent with the team's best 18 holes Tuesday with a 2-under 68, to vault him from 74th all the way to 51st at 10-over 220.
Oregon's Daniel Miernicki shot a tournament-low 64 to garner medalist honors by three strokes over Washington's Nick Taylor with an 8-under 202, at the par-70, 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course.
San Diego State will be back in action this weekend when the team travels to the Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas, for the Aggie Invitational, April 17-18.
