The No. 33 San Diego State men's golf team shaved 12 strokes of its first-round score, surging into a first place tie through 36 holes Monday at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. The Aztecs completed Sunday's rain-shortened first round with a 7-over 287 and then posted a 5-under 275 in the afternoon to tie third-ranked Washington for the lead at 2-over 562 at the par-70, 6,742-yard Stanford University Golf Course.

SDSU's J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), who won the Thunderbird Invitational in Arizona nine days ago, once again finds himself amongst the leaders. Spaun is tied for second place in the 107-participant field with back-to-back sub-70 rounds, including a 68 in the afternoon with five birdies. The sophomore is tied with Pepperdine's Andrew Putnam at 3-under 137, only one stroke in back of leader and second-ranked Nick Taylor of Washington, who has a 136.

Aztec freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England) is also in the individual top 10 with an even-par 140, highlighted by a career-low 68 in the second round. Berry began the tournament with a 72, but then eagled the par 5 16th hole, which preceded a 3-under performance on the final nine holes of the day.

San Diego State sophomore Andrew Cooley (New Haw, England) jumped from 36th all the way to 19th place with his second round 2-under 68, while classmate Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) is just one stroke behind him with a 3-over 143 to tie for 23rd.

The Aztecs biggest improvement of the day, however, went to junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) who shot an uncharacteristic first-round 80, before bouncing back with a second round 72 to currently stand in a tie for 74th place with a 152.

This year's U.S. Intercollegiate, which includes nine top-40 schools and four of the nation's top 10 individual golfers, concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes beginning at 7:30 a.m. PT with a shotgun start. Live results are available on goaztecs.com and golfstat.com.
