PROVO, Utah - The No. 74 San Diego State women's tennis team was upset by Brigham Young on the road, 5-2, in a Mountain West Conference match Thursday afternoon. The loss drops the Aztecs to 7-8 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
SDSU dropped the doubles match at the top of the order to start the day, but answered with a win at No. 2 when Alicia Aguilar and Julia Trunk emerged with an 8-5 victory over Chie Hayasaka and Andie Young. With doubles knotted at 1 apiece, the overall point came down to the contest at No. 3 and the Cougar duo of Elle Carney and Liza Ezhova were able to wrestle the point away from Emma Cioffi and Julia Wais with their 8-5 decision as the home team took a 1-0 advantage into singles.
BYU moved to 2-0 when Kristina Doerr upset No. 78 Alicia Aguilar in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, at the second position. Soon thereafter, the Cougars were within one point of the team victory when Hayaska beat Wais at No. 3, 6-2, 7-5.
With San Diego State facing a 3-0 deficit, No. 50 Trunk could not prevent BYU from clinching its first conference win of the season as No. 52 McCall Jones posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over her fellow ranked opponent to seal the deal for BYU.
Down 4-0, SDSU dented the scoreboard with consecutive wins at Nos. 5 and 6. Sierra Ellison continued her dominant play at the fifth position and beat Ezhova, 6-3, ret. With the victory, Ellison improves to 7-2 at the spot. Olivia Colman, meanwhile, logged a 6-1, 6-4 win over Young at No. 6 to round out the scoring for the Aztecs.
San Diego State remains in the Beehive State for another MWC match at Utah. The Aztecs will face the 49th-ranked Utes on Saturday with first serve set for noon MT.
