Junior Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) threw a complete game one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to lead the San Diego State softball team to a 1-0 victory over UTEP Thursday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (9-8) snapped the Miners' (13-4) 13-game winning steak with the victory.

Beasley (6-5) was perfect through 4 1/3 innings until Kayleigh Walts beat out junior shortstop Jen Wisneski's (Riverside, Calif.) throw for an infield single. It was the only UTEP baserunner allowed by Beasley, who had her second one-hit, 13-strikeout shutout of the year. The Miners, who like SDSU are receiving votes in the latest USA Today/NFCA poll, came into the game with a .318 batting average, 18 home runs and 111 runs in 16 games (6.94 runs per game).

It appeared the game was going to extra innings with UTEP pitcher Stacie Townsend (11-3) holding San Diego State to just three singles through the first five innings. However, Aztec sophomore Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) reached on a throwing error by the Miner shortstop to lead off the bottom of the sixth. She moved to second one batter later when redshirt senior Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) drew a one-out walk. Following a groundout by sophomore Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS/Cal State Bakersfield) that advanced the runners, freshman Tanya Holguin (Woodland, Calif.) singled toward the hole near the shortstop to score Reifschneider with the winning run. It was Holguin's team-leading third game-winning RBI of the season.

Senior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) reached base safely twice (single, walk), while Maeva and junior Traci Wolf (Lancaster, Calif.) each added singles.

San Diego State resumes its play in the San Diego Classic I Friday with a game against Oregon at 7 p.m.
