SAN DIEGO - San Diego State swept three doubles matches from one of the top doubles programs in the country on Thursday afternoon but it was not enough as 28th-ranked Fresno State rallied for a 4-3 victory at the Aztec Tennis Center.
Fresno State, which entered the match with two doubles teams ranked among the top 44 nationally, were unable to win any of the three matches. San Diego State's Juan Gomez and Luis Rattenhuber teamed up to defeat 24th-ranked Remi Boutillier and Rikus de Villiers, 8-6. The Bulldogs elected to split up the 44th-ranked doubles team of Tejesvi Veerepalli and Mirko Zapletal but to no avail. The Aztecs earned victories at number two doubles from Achim Ceban and Giovanni Vaglietti and number three doubles from Andre Felix and Tim Schulz van Endert.
San Diego State earned a pair of team points in singles play, winning at the top and bottom of the lineup. At number one singles, Gomez made quick work of Mirko Zapletal, 6-1, 6-1, while at number six singles, Schulz van Endert was victorious, 7-6, 7-6.
San Diego State, which has now faced five nationally-ranked opponents this season, fell to 1-7, while Fresno State improved to 9-5 on the season. The Aztecs are back in action tomorrow as they begin play in the Pacific Coast Doubles event in La Jolla, Calif.
