San Diego State, ranked 35th in the nation, captured the Barona Collegiate Cup title in convincing fashion and won by 22 strokes on Friday at Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif. The Aztecs, who led by 18 strokes after 36 holes, finished ahead of second-place UC Irvine and defeated top-ranked and third-place Oregon by 25 strokes.

Johan Carlsson shot a 2-under 70 to finish in second place in the 104-player field, but was unable to catch individual champion John Chin of UCI. Chin finished the 54-hole tournament at 12-under par, while the SDSU junior fired a combined 9-under 207.

Alex Kang finished his Barona experience in a tie for fifth place. The sophomore posted a 2-over 74 in the final round to notch a three-round total of 2-under 214. Classmate J.J. Spaun, meanwhile, shot a 75 on Friday and finished at 1-under par for the tournament to finish alone in ninth place. Carlsson, Kang and Spaun were three of only nine competitors to finish the tournament under par and SDSU was the only school to accomplish the feat.

Matt Hoffenberg jumped 10 spots from his first-day slot and finished in a tie for 14th place. The junior shot a 1-under 71 in his final round and logged a 54-hole total of 218 (+2).

Andrew Cooley, who was one of three Aztecs to finish at even par or better, entered the clubhouse with a third-round total of even-par 72. The sophomore's performance was his best of his three rounds and logged a tournament total of 221 (+5).

Freshman Tom Berry saved his best for last and shot a 1-over 73 on Friday. The England native cut strokes off his previous round twice, shooting a 76 in the opening round, coming back with a 74 in the second and then posting a 73 today.

To show the depth of the squad, Tyler Morris, who was competing as an individual, posted a third-round score of 71 (-1). The redshirt sophomore finished the tournament at 8-over par (224) and in a tie for 40th place. Morris' final position was 19 slots better than his spot after 36 holes.

The tournament title is the second of 2009-10 for the Aztecs. Earlier this season, SDSU won the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational back in November. In fact, this is just the second time, and first since 2002, that San Diego State has won the Barona Collegiate Cup.

In addition to defeating the No. 1 Ducks, the Aztecs emerged with the team championship by beating fellow Mountain West Conference schools Wyoming, Utah and Air Force, and institutions from the Big 12, Big West, Big Ten, and WAC.

San Diego State returns to action April 2-3 when it competes at the Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
