The 35th-ranked San Diego State men's golf team turned a four-stroke deficit after one round into an 18-stroke lead by the end of 36 holes to take a commanding lead at the Barona Collegiate Cup at Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif. As a team, the Aztecs shot an 8-under 712 for the two rounds with Nevada trailing them in second place at 10-over par (730).
Leading the way for the Scarlet and Black was Johan Carlsson, who shot a 7-under 137. The junior fired a 4-under 68 on the first 18 holes and came back with a 69 (-3) the second time around to find himself just one stroke behind UC Irvine's John Chin, who heads into the final day as the individual leader.
Sophomores Alex Kang and J.J. Spaun join Carlsson in the hunt for the tournament championship as they both entered the clubhouse at 4-under par (140) and in a tie for third place. Kang went 71 and 69 in his two rounds, while Spaun was a model of consistency with his two 70s.
Matt Hoffenberg is one of four Aztecs to enter the final round in the top 25. The junior currently sits in a tie for 23rd place after shooting 3-over for the day. Hoffenberg shot an even-par 72 in the morning and came back with a 75 to end his day.
Sophomore Andrew Cooley, meanwhile, shot a 4-over 76 on the first 18 holes, but answered back in a huge way in the afternoon with his 1-over 73. Cooley is 5-over for the tournament and in a tie for 35th place.
Tom Berry wrapped up San Diego State's team effort just one shot back of Cooley at 6-over par. The freshman shot a 76 in his opening round before posting a 2-over 74 the second time around. He is currently in a tie for 42nd place.
The Aztecs head into Friday's final round ahead of top-ranked Oregon, which is in fifth place, and Mountain West Conference foes Wyoming (7th), Utah (t-13th) and Air Force (15th). Third and final-round action starts Friday at 7:30 a.m. PT.
