San Diego State senior guard Jené Morris (San Francisco, Calif.) is among a group of just 40 players from across the nation to be named a finalist for the 2010 State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Thursday.
The 40 finalists were chosen by WBCA-member coaches from a group of 52 regional nominees. Morris is now in the running for selection to the 10-member State Farm Coaches' All-America Team, which will be announced on April 3 at 11:05 a.m. PT from the Final Four in San Antonio, Texas.
Morris has led the Aztecs to the program's first Sweet 16 appearance since the field was expanded to 64 teams. SDSU knocked off a pair of top-25 foes in the first two rounds of the NCAAs in No. 17/20 Texas and later No. 10/10 West Virginia to advance to this week's regional in Memphis, Tenn., to face sixth-ranked Duke on Saturday.
Morris is the first SDSU player to lead the Mountain West Conference in scoring in league games and is also currently first in overall outings with a 17.2 average. The co-captain has scored in 20 or more points 25 times in her career with 12 coming in 2009-10, including in each of the team's NCAA victories. Morris is the MWC's all-time leader in career steals and ranks third in school history in points with 1,486, despite having played only three seasons on The Mesa.
Morris' other honors this year include being named the MWC Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive campaign and is a two-time first-team all-conference and all-defensive pick, as well as a three-time selection to the MWC championship all-tournament squad.
Morris earned honorable mention All-America accolades last season, becoming just the third Aztec so honored in program history and the first since Hall of Famer Falisha Wright was tabbed twice in 1993 and 1994.
SDSU currently boasts a 23-10 overall record, captured its first-ever Mountain West Conference championship title and is the lowest seed to advance to the round of 16 in 2010.
