SAN DIEGO - San Diego State freshman right-hander Bryan Crabb allowed only a pair of singles in a complete-game shutout effort and the Aztec offense took advantage of its scoring opportunities as SDSU defeated Santa Clara, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Crabb (Coronado HS, Coronado, Calif.), making his fifth collegiate start, went the distance allowing just a pair of singles and issuing two walks over nine innings. Along the way he recorded a season-high eight strikeouts as he evened his record at 2-2 and lowered his season ERA to 2.05.
The Aztecs opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning. A leadoff single by Chris Wilson and one-out walk to Jomel Torres set the stage for Brandon Meredith's double down the left field line that scored both runners. Meredith then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Cory Vaughn's sacrifice fly to center.
SDSU added a run to its lead in the fifth when Jordan Van Hoosier's two-out single brought home Torres from second base. The hit was the third of Van Hoosier's four singles on the afternoon as he went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a pair of stolen bases.
Two innings later the lead became a 6-0 advantage as Vaughn's two-run single scored Mitch Blackburn and Torres from second and third respectively. That hit spelled the end of the day for Santa Clara starter Alex Rivers, who would take the loss to see his record fall to 1-3.
The Aztecs final run came in the bottom of the eighth when Brandon Decker walked, went to third on a ground out and a Bronco fielding error, and scored on a wild pitch.
For SDSU, Torres had a pair of hits and scored three times while Vaughn finished with three RBI.
San Diego State and Santa Clara will play the third contest of their four-game series on Monday, March 22, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
