MALIBU, Calif. - No. 64 San Diego State had its two-match winning streak snapped on Saturday as the Aztecs were edged by 50th-ranked Pepperdine, 4-3, at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on the campus of Pepperdine University. With the loss, SDSU falls to 7-6 on the season.
San Diego State won the doubles point, but it was a grind from the outset. Julia Trunk and Julia Wais were the first tandem off the court after they recorded an 8-5 victory over Ali Walters and Arianna Colffer at No. 2. Then at third doubles, Alicia Aguilar and Emma Cioffi lost a hard-fought 9-8(4) decision to Andrea Oates and Tania Rice to even things at 1-1. With the point on the line, Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison came through in the clutch and defeated their Wave counterparts, No. 65 Anamika Bhargava/Marie Zalameda, at the top of the order, 8-6, to secure the point for the Aztecs.
After a brief break in the action, singles play got underway and Pepperdine clawed its way back into the match. No. 83 Arianna Colffer knotted the match at 1-1 after she defeated 80th-ranked Aguilar, 6-4, 6-1. Later, the Waves won matches at Nos. 4 and 5 to take a 3-1 lead and Pepperdine delivered the final blow at No. 6 when Tania Rice beat Olivia Colman in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to earn the home team the decisive fourth point.
With the outcome already in hand, Wais finished off Ali Walters in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6, and No. 71 Trunk emerged with a 6-4, 6-7, 14-12 victory over Anamika Bhargava at No. 1 to provide the final score.
San Diego State returns to action on Wednesday, March 24, when it opens Mountain West Conference play at UNLV. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. PT.
