Final Stats

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State scored six times in the fifth inning, erasing a two-run deficit as the Aztecs defeated Santa Clara, 7-5, Friday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The victory ended a three-game skid for SDSU which improved to 7-10. The Broncos, meanwhile, saw their record drop to 7-8 on the year.

Preseason All-American right-hander Addison Reed made his fifth start of the season and was greeted by a quick three-run outburst by the visitors in the opening inning. Those runs came on a leadoff triple by Lucas Herbst, a double by Curtis Wagner and a two-run homer from Geoff Klein.

After falling behind 3-0, Reed settled in and retired the next 10 batters he faced and would shut out the Broncos over the next six innings.

After cutting Santa Clara's advantage to two with a run in the third, the Aztecs got their offense going against Bronco starter Nate Garcia two innings later. The six-run rally in the fifth came on five hits, three walks and a sacrifice fly as SDSU took a 7-3 lead.

After loading the bases with one out on a double by Chris Wilson and walks to Mitch Blackburn and Jomel Torres, San Diego State tied the game at 3-3 on Brandon Meredith's two-run single to right. Cory Vaughn followed with an RBI single to left and SDSU re-loaded the bases when Jordan Van Hoosier reached on an infield single. Freshman Blair Moore then laced a two-RBI single through the right side before Blake Silguero's sacrifice fly to right capped off the scoring.

Santa Clara came back with two runs in the eighth off a pair of Aztec relievers, but John Pecoraro came on in the ninth and retired the side in order to record his second save. That made a winner of Reed (4-1) while Garcia (1-4) was saddled with the loss.

Meredith and Moore both finished the night with two hits and two RBI apiece while Chris Wilson also had a pair of hits including a single and a double.

Santa Clara and San Diego State will continue their scheduled four-game series with a single contest on Sunday, March 21, at 1:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
