Sophomore Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS/Cal State Bakersfield) drove in four runs and senior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) had three hits and three runs to lead the San Diego State softball team to a 10-2 victory over Kansas in six innings Friday at the San Diego Classic II. It was the ninth consecutive victory for the Aztecs (17-8), who are receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls.
SDSU has outscored its opponents, 48-8, over the win streak with three of the victories coming against nationally ranked schools, two versus teams receiving votes in a poll and four against 2009 NCAA tournament teams.
San Diego State outhit the Jayhawks (12-15), 13-7, to improve to 15-0 this season when outhitting its opponent. Maeva had two of the hits, including a two-run triple in the fifth inning, and tied her career high with four RBIs. Knudsen was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and now has a team-best eight multi-hit games in 2010.
Freshman Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) had two hits and drove in two runs, while junior Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) stretched her hitting streak to six games with two singles and a run scored. Junior Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) had a two-run double in the sixth and later scored, and sophomore Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) scored her 21st and 22nd runs of the season (in 24 games).
Junior Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) picked up her eighth straight win after striking out all seven batters she faced in relief. She did not allow a hit over the final 2 1/3 innings. In fact, Kansas only made contact (fouled strikes) on four of Beasley's (13-5) 29 pitches.
Sophomore Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) got the start and gave up two runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings. She struck out five.
The Aztecs continue their play in the San Diego Classic II Saturday with a game against Harvard at 2 p.m. at SDSU Softball Stadium.
