SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's tennis team staged a furious rally Sunday to beat visiting No. 48 Saint Mary's, 4-3, after falling behind 3-0. The Aztecs started the day at the Aztec Tennis Center by losing the doubles point and the first two singles matches, but then won the next four matches in a row to upset the Gaels and improve their record to 7-5.
After the team of Julia Wais and Julia Trunk won at No. 2 doubles, 8-3, Saint Mary's (8-4) took the point after winning at No. 2 and overcoming three straight SDSU match points in at No. 3 to earn the early lead. The Gaels later stretched its lead to 3-0 by winning at No. 1 and No. 4 singles.
San Diego State freshman Alicia Aguilar got the Aztecs on the board by winning her No. 2 singles match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Julia Wais and Olivia Coleman both recorded wins at Nos. 3 and 6, respectively, to tie the score at 3-3 going with only one match still in progress.
The No. 5 singles match went true to form, going down to the very last point before Roxanne Ellison prevailed 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(5) to give San Diego State the team victory.
SDSU will try to keep their two-game winning streak intact when they travel to Malibu, Calif., next Saturday to face off against Pepperdine. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT.
