SAN DIEGO - San Diego State's Karoline Koehler finished fourth in the long jump on the first day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday in Fayetteville, Ark. The Erfurt, Germany, native bettered her school record with a jump of 21 feet, 7.50 inches.
Koehler was fourth after the preliminary flight with a leap of 21-1 ¼. She then vaulted to third place with her school-record jump, before Brigham Young's Mandy McClurkin edged Koehler on her final jump of the competition. Koehler was seeded seventh headed into the weekend.
With the fourth-place finish, Koehler earned All-America honors for the fifth time in her career and first time in the indoor long jump. Koehler's other All-America selections have been in the long jump (2009 outdoor) and triple jump (2008 indoor, 2009 indoor, 2009 outdoor). She'll go for No. 6 tomorrow when she competes in the triple jump beginning at 6:30 p.m. CT (4:30 p.m. PT). Redshirt junior Stephanie James will go for her third All-America certificate when she competes in the pole vault beginning at 5 p.m. CT/3 p.m. PT.
The rest of the Aztec track and field team participated in the team's lone home meet of the season the Aztec Track and Field Classic. SDSU won seven events on the first day of the two-day event, including Amber Waddell in the 100-meter dash, AnSherae Devine in the 800, Josefine Koskinen in the 1,500, Kierstan Kirkland in the 100-meter hurdles, Moriah Roberge in the pole vault (12-00.00) and Julianne Alarcio in the long jump (18-07.25).
The Aztec Track and Field Classic will continue tomorrow beginning with the long jump and women's 5K at 11 a.m. PT.
