SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State softball team stretched its winning streak to five games in a 5-0 victory over Buffalo Wednesday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (13-8) have outscored their opponents, 24-2, over the stretch.
SDSU banged out 14 hits on the night, its second-most in a game this season, while the pitching duo of junior Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) and freshman Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) combined for their second consecutive two-hit shutout.
Sophomore Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS/Cal State Bakersfield) had three hits and two RBIs, while junior Jen Wisneski (Riverside, Calif.) added two hits, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning. San Diego State also received two hits apiece from senior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS), junior Traci Wolf (Lancaster, Calif.) and freshman Tanya Holguin (Woodland, Calif.). Sophomore Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) scored two runs and now has 17 on the season in 20 games.
Reifschneider (walk), Knudsen (bunt single) and junior Eva Sahatdjian (Fresno, Calif./Fresno City College) loaded the bases in the first with no outs. A groundout by Maeva scored Reifschneider, but Bull (6-8) starting pitcher Terese Diaz got out of the jam by retiring the next two batters on a fielder's choice groundout and a strikeout.
In the second inning, Holguin led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.). Wisneski then took the first pitch she saw well over the left-center field wall for her first homer of the season and second of her career.
Camello put the Aztecs up, 4-0, in the third on a single that scored Wolf, before Maeva's infield single in the fourth scored Reifschneider for the final run of the game.
Beasley earned the start and allowed two infield singles over five scoreless innings. She struck out nine to improve to 9-5 on the season. Beasley has now gone 26 1/3 innings without allowing a run, the longest scoreless streak of her career.
Like last night in SDSU's 5-0 win over Northern Illinois, May pitched a perfect two innings of relief. She ended the game on a strikeout.
San Diego State, which has already played 12 teams this season who were nationally ranked or receiving votes and eight schools who made the 2009 NCAA tournament, is slated to play five games over the weekend at the Children's Hospital Invitational in Columbia, Mo. The Aztecs kick things off Friday against No. 21/25 Illinois at 5 p.m. CT/3 p.m. PT and will meet Bradley immediately after in the nightcap.
