NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - No. 13 San Diego State went a perfect 2-0 on the second day of the UCI Invitational with its 11-8 victory over 15th-ranked UC Davis Sunday afternoon at Corona del Mar High School. With the win, the Aztecs improve to 10-5 on the season.

Freshman Amber Pezzolla was the catalyst for SDSU in this game as she scored a career-best five goals. Her effort matched that of Ronni Gautschi and Leanne Ford for most goals in a single game this season. Joining Pezzolla in the scoring column was Alex Ford, who netted three goals, Melissa de Jonckheere, who scored twice, and Hilary Whelan.

San Diego State made a statement early by putting up five goals and shutting out the Aggies in the first quarter. The offensive production continued in the second period when the Aztecs outpointed UC Davis, 2-1, to take a 7-1 lead into the break.

The Aggies began to show signs of life in the third period after they scored two goals, but San Diego State scored a pair of its own to maintain its six-goal lead going into the final eight minutes.

With the Aztecs in control of the game with a 9-3 lead, UC Davis made things interesting with its five-spot in the fourth quarter. SDSU, however, would not be shutout as it scored twice in the period to secure the three-goal win to claim the 13th-place game.

San Diego State returns to action on Friday, March 5, when it opens Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action at top-ranked Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. First sprint is slated for 4 p.m. PT.
