CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -

The San Diego State softball team dropped a pair of games to Big 12 opponents Baylor and No. 24/19 Texas A&M Friday at the Cathedral City Classic. The Aztecs (8-7) dropped the opener, 11-0, to the Bears (8-4) in five innings, before their late rally came up short in a 7-6, extra-inning loss to the Aggies (12-3).

In the nightcap, SDSU rallied from a 6-2 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, all which came with two outs. Junior Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) singled to keep the inning alive, and freshman Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) (hit by pitch) and junior Traci Wolf (Lancaster, Calif.) (walked) reached safely to load the bases. Junior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) came through with a first-pitch double to center field, reaching third base in the process. Redshirt senior Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) doubled home Knudsen with the tying score.

The game went to extra innings after senior pitcher Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) struck out the side in the seventh and San Diego State failed to win it in its bottom half.

In the eighth, Texas A&M's Andrea Tovar was placed on second due to the international tiebreaker rule and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. After Beasley struck out Kelsea Orsak, Macie Morrow laced a two-out single to center field to put the Aggies up, 7-6.

In the top of the eighth, freshman Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) was placed on second and advanced to third on Camello's third hit of the game. Camello moved to second on junior Jen Wisneski's (Riverside, Calif.) groundout, but Jackson was unable to score from third. After a popout, Knudsen drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Alnes was unable to deliver again, however, and the Aztecs dropped the 7-6 decision.

Sophomore Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS/Cal State Bakersfield) homered in the second and senior Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario (San Diego/Morse HS) scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Camello in the fourth to account for SDSU's other two runs.

Camello's three hits led the offense, while Knudsen was 2-for-3 with three RBI, two walks and a run scored. Junior Eva Sahatdjian (Fresno, Calif.) added two singles for San Diego State.

Beasley (5-5) took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks over five innings of relief. She struck out nine. Sophomore Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) pitched the first three innings and gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks, while striking out five.

In the opener, the Bears (8-4) scored runs in each of their four at-bats to run-rule the Aztecs, 11-0, in five innings. Baylor, which is receiving votes in both national polls, outhit SDSU, 12-2, for the game, scoring one run in the bottom of the first, three in the second, four in the third and another three in the fourth.

Wisneski and Maeva each singled for San Diego State, while redshirt junior Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) reached on a walk.

Beasley started the game for the Aztecs, but was chased after just 1 1/3 innings. Beasley was once again the victim of two errors by the SDSU infield that ended up leading to four runs (two earned). She struck out four and walked two. Redshirt sophomore Brooke Petty (San Diego/Vista, Calif.) relieved Beasley in the second and gave up seven runs on nine hits over 2 2/3 innings.

San Diego State wraps up its play in the Cathedral City Classic Saturday with a game against No. 13/14 California, beginning at 3 p.m. PT.
