SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's crew team will get its spring season underway this Saturday, Feb. 27, when it competes at the annual San Diego City Championships on Mission Bay with the meet's opening race scheduled for a 6:30 a.m. start. The Aztecs will vie for the local title against teams from the University of San Diego as well as UC San Diego.
The Aztecs will have boats entered in four of the five women's events including the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Varsity Four and Frosh/Novice eight. The City Championship meet was not held last season due to weather, but in 2007 SDSU claimed victory in four of the six races held.
San Diego State's first event will be the Varsity Eight which is set to begin at 6:45 a.m. followed the the Second Varsity eight at 7:15. The Frosh/Novice Eight race begins at 7:45 a.m. with the meet concluding with the Women's Varsity Four at 8:45. An awards ceremony will follow that event at approximately 9:30.
"I am really excited to start the spring season and get racing underway," commented Aztec head coach Jen Zebroski. "This race will be a good gauge of our speed even though it is early on in the season. We have about two months still to go until our championship races. I feel as though all of our boats are fully prepared, know their race plan and strategy, and are physically and mentally ready for Saturday."
