SAN DIEGO - San Diego State combined 10 walks and three hit batters with some timely hitting as it defeated UC Riverside, 14-1, Tuesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The victory was the first of the season for the Aztecs (1-4) while it marked the first loss of the year for the Highlanders (4-1).
SDSU got out of the gate quickly against UCR right-hander Eddie Orozco, who was making his first appearance of the season. After getting the first hitter in the opening frame, Orozco gave up a walk top Jomel Torres and double to Brandon Meredith before hitting Cory Vaughn to load the bases.
A walk to Jordan Van Hoosier followed by a Matt Parker double gave the home side a quick 3-0 lead which they extended to a five-run advantage on Blair Moore's ensuing single and a sacrifice fly by Josh Chasse.
On the mound, Aztec junior Steven Moranda made his starting debut a good one as he tossed six innings, allowing a run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts while picking up his first win. The relief duo of Ryan Wynveen and Corey Black held the Highlanders to one hit over the final three frames as well.
After the visitors got a run back in the top of the fifth, SDSU would go on to score in every inning the rest of the way. Vaughn hit a three-run home in the sixth, his first of the year, while Torres added a two-run shot in the seventh.
Torres finished the evening the three hits, three runs scored and two RBI while teammate Blair Moore also had three hits including a double with a run and two RBI. Vaughn and Matt Parker ended the night with three RBI apiece.
San Diego State returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 25, to begin a four-game series against 19th-ranked San Diego. The first game between the Aztecs and Toreros will be held at Tony Gwynn Stadium at 6:00 p.m. that evening.
