SAN DIEGO -

The San Diego State softball team dropped a pair of games at the 20th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic Saturday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (7-3) fell to No. 1/1 Washington, 5-0, in the opener before losing to Penn State, 3-1, in the nightcap.

In the first game, SDSU failed to become the first team to beat the Huskies (7-1) this season when their 2009 College Softball Player of the Year Danielle Lawrie was in the circle. San Diego State sophomore Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) reached on an infield single to begin the game but the Aztecs were held hitless the rest of the way. Reifschneider later drew a walk, while senior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) reached on an error and stole a base. For the game, Lawrie stuck out 11 to improve to 5-0 on the season.

SDSU junior pitcher Samantha Beasley (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) matched Lawrie for most of the game until Washington broke open a scoreless contest with five runs in the sixth inning. Beasley wasn't helped by a dropped foul ball (and subsequent two-run home run by Lawrie) and a pair of wild pitches. For the game, Beasley allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk over 5 1/3 innings. She struck out seven. Sophomore Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) gave up two hits in 2/3 innings of relief.

In the second game, San Diego State left eight runners on base in a 3-1 loss to Penn State, a night after leaving 12 on in a 7-2 win over Western Kentucky.

The Nittany Lions (6-3), who earlier in the day defeated Utah State, 6-1, got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Jackie Hill hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Ashley Griffith. Desi Giordano followed with a single on a 3-2 pitch to score pinch-runner Shannon Hutchinson with the eventual game-winner.

The Aztecs answered right back in their bottom half when junior Traci Wolf (Lancaster, Calif.) got things going with a two-out walk. Wolf then stole second base and scored on a triple by redshirt junior Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.).

A solo home run by Kailyn Johnson to lead off the sixth, also on a 3-2 pitch, rounded out PSU's scoring.

Wolf reached all three times she was up, walking twice and doubling in the second inning. Knudsen singled and walked, while three others had a hit apiece.

Micetich (1-2) took the loss after yielding three runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings. She struck out five and walked two. Beasley struck out both batters she faced in the seventh inning, stranding Penn State runners on first and second base.

SDSU wraps up its play in the Campbell/Cartier on Sunday with a 12:30 p.m. game against Utah State.
