Junior Samantha Beasley (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) tossed a complete game one-hit shutout to lead the San Diego State softball team to a 6-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara Thursday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. With the win in the opener of the 20th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic, the Aztecs improved to 6-1 on the season, while the Gauchos fell to an even 4-4.

Beasley gave up just a two-out fifth inning single to Lainey DePompa, while striking out 13, one off her career high. She allowed two UCSB baserunners with the first coming on a SDSU throwing error. Beasley, who was named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, is now 5-0 on the year with a 0.24 ERA over 29 1/3 innings. She has 45 strikeouts to just five walks, while limiting her opponents to a .112 batting average.

Beasley was helped by a four-run San Diego State third inning, highlighted by a three-run homer by sophomore Cal State Bakersfield transfer Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS). Freshman Tanya Holguin (Woodland, Calif.) doubled home sophomore Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) with the first run and was then replaced at second by redshirt freshman Roshana Lavery (San Diego/Mission Bay HS). Playing in her first-ever collegiate game, Lavery moved to third on a single by redshirt senior Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) before Maeva took a 1-0 pitch and cleared the bases with a homer well over the left field fence. It was Maeva's first home run as an Aztec and fifth of her career.

SDSU tacked on two more runs in the fourth when senior Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) (single, stolen base) and Reifschneider (walk) each reached base safely to begin the threat. After a strikeout, Alnes laced a double into the left-center gap that scored the two speedy San Diego State baserunners.

Holguin had a career-high three hits to pace the Aztec offense, while Alnes and Knudsen each added two hits. Maeva's three-run homer gives SDSU four in seven games this season after recording just 12 in 53 games in 2009.

San Diego State will continue its play in the Campbell/Cartier on Friday when it meets Western Kentucky at 7 p.m. PT.
