SDSU Softball Plays Host to No. 1/1 Washington, Four Other Teams at 20th Annual Campbell/Cartier Classic
The San Diego State softball team plays host to the 20th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic this weekend at SDSU Softball Stadium. The six-team tournament will feature the 5-1 Aztecs, who are receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball national polls, and the defending national champion and No. 1/1 Washington.
SDSU and the Huskies (5-0) will be joined by UC Santa Barbara (4-1), Utah State (4-1), Penn State (3-2) and Western Kentucky (1-2).
This year's classic kicks off at 7 p.m. Thursday when San Diego State takes on UCSB and will conclude in a contest between the Aztecs and Utah State at 12:30 p.m. Sunday. SDSU will play five games total over the tournament - 7 p.m. Thursday versus UC Santa Barbara, 7 p.m. Friday against Western Kentucky, 5:15 p.m. Saturday vs. Washington, 7:30 p.m. Saturday versus Penn State and 12:30 p.m. Sunday against Utah State.
The tournament is named after Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier, who lost their lives during the 1991 softball season in a single-car accident that took place in Rosarito, Mexico. It left a lasting mark on teammates, coaches and the program. To pay tribute to Campbell and Cartier, the SDSU softball team renamed the SDSU Spring Classic in 1994 to the Campbell/Cartier Classic in memory of their friendship and fine athletic ability.
Last weekend, San Diego State won its first five games at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., including four against teams also receiving votes in one of the two polls and two against fellow 2009 NCAA tournament teams, before dropping its finale to Texas Tech on Sunday by a 6-1 margin.
