The San Diego State men's golf team moved up a spot in the final standings to take fifth at the 54-hole Battle at the Beach in Newport Coast, Calif. The Aztecs fired a tournament-low 351 over the final 18 holes on Tuesday to end up at 5-over 1,070 on the par-71, 6,945-yard Ocean North Course at the Pelican Hill Golf Club.
SDSU had three golfers finish in the top 20, including redshirt sophomore Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) and sophomore J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), who each tied for 11th place at 2-under 211. Junior Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) carded a team tournament-best and season-low 67 to move from 36th all the way to 15th place with a 1-under 212.
Aztec junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) also made a significant gain in the final standings, using a 2-under 69 to get himself into the top 30 with a 2-over 215 to tie for 26th place. Sophomore Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) and freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England) rounded out the SDSU contingent as each tied for 58th and 64th, respectively.
UCLA, ranked 14th nationally by golfstat.com, moved from fifth all the way to first place on the final day with a final-round 348 to win by one stroke over Arkansas. Razorback David Lingmerth and Washington's Chris Williams tied for medalist honors at 8-under 205.
The inaugural Battle At The Beach utilized a unique format with six golfers per team, rather than the usual five. The best five rounds counted toward each school's score.
San Diego State will be back in action March 1-2, as the Aztecs travel to the USC Invitational at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
