Battle At The Beach - Day 1 Results in PDF Format
The San Diego State men's golf team is in third place after 18 holes Sunday at the Battle At The Beach at the par-71, 6,945-yard Ocean North Course at the Pelican Hill Golf Club in Newport Coast, Calif. The Aztecs, ranked 31st nationally by Golfweek, notched a 3-under 352, three strokes behind second place Arkansas and four in back of day-one leader and No. 21 Oregon State, which posted a 7-under 348.
SDSU was led by redshirt sophomore Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.), who continued his strong play this spring with a 3-under 68 to tie for fifth place out of 86 golfers. Featherstone had five birdies on the day, including on each of the first two holes and on the par-4 18th to round out the afternoon. He trails co-leaders Oregon State's Mike Barry and Diego Velasquez, who is ranked second nationally by Golfstat.com, by only two strokes as both fired 5-under 66s.
Sophomore J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) is the second Aztec in the top 10 after 18 holes as he carded a 2-under 69 to tie for ninth place with five birdies, three of which came on the back nine. Freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England) and junior Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) are both tied for 23rd place at even-par, while junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and sophomore Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) are also tied at 2-over 75 to sit in 38th place.
The inaugural Battle At The Beach is utilizing a unique format with six golfers per team, rather than the usual five. The best five rounds count toward each school's score. Tee times begin at 7:05 a.m. for Monday's second round at the 54-hole tournament.
