SAN DIEGO -
SDSU-Wyoming Postgame Quotes in PDF Format
San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher
(From the postgame press conference in the Mezzanine Level and the postgame radio intervew on AM 600 KOGO)
On the win:
"After the first seven or eight minutes I thought we were quite good at both ends of the floor. Wyoming played well early on. We gave them too many layups. Three or four of them were off turnovers, the others were straight drives. We ended the first half strong and seized all the momentum in our favor. At halftime I told our team that I felt good how we finished the half. We were making it very hard for them to get good looks. From the opening tip of the second half we played better defensively and played like it was a tie game. We didn't give them easy stuff and that is what you have to do. If you keep them off of the free throw line, we feel like we have the best opportunity to win. It was a nice win in the fashion that we got it."
On Chase Tapley:
"He's got great instincts. He's got good balance. He knows how to play inside of 10 feet, which is sometimes hard for a guard."
On the rebounding edge:
"Early on they got to the rim and we didn't challenge. Late in the game we made it very hard for them. We attacked to the ball harder. That made it hard for them to get into creases."
On UNLV:
"It will be a big one. Those teams ahead of us are all very good. As a conference we've never had three teams ranked in the Top 25. We wish we were one of them. Right now we just need to come out and play well against UNLV."
On sharing the ball:
"One of the best things I saw down the stretch, when we knew we were going to win, was we shared the ball continuously. We had 23 assists on 33 baskets, and that is a sign of good players on a good team. They are willing to give up a look at the basket to give somebody else an opportunity."
On this game being a "revenge"' game:
"I don't know that revenge is the word. We lost a game in Wyoming that we should have won. That is easy for us to say. Wyoming came back and won that game. They scored 24 points in 4:12. We watched that tape and said we can't play only 36 minutes. I think you play harder the next time after you have been beaten by a team."
San Diego State Senior Guard Kelvin Davis
On how the team feels about their current position in the MWC standings:
"Anything can happen in conference play. The teams at the top might take a day off, and they might not. They might get lost and maybe we can steal a couple games, so we just want to go out there and win every game. In conference play it's how you finish and of course we got the Mountain West Conference [Tournament] and everybody has to play well there. So we just want to position ourselves to get to the NCAA tournament."
San Diego State Freshman Forward Kawhi Leonard
On his success against Wyoming:
"I went out today hard and aggressive. My team found me when I was open; they helped me out a lot in getting good looks."
On if there was a letdown after that emotional loss at New Mexico:
"We learned from that first experience, so we know what to do in those situations now."
San Diego State Freshman Guard Chase Tapley
On if it felt good beating Wyoming after the road loss earlier in the year:
"Yeah, it does feel good. We got the lead and capitalized on the lead. Last time [we played] we let up; we relaxed. [This time] we just kept on pushing and put them away."
Wyoming Head Coach Heath Schroyer
On what happened during the second half:
"They made a run and we just never answered it. I thought the first 25 minutes we played really good. Then they made a run and we just won't able to counter that. The first eight minutes of the second half, they really came out and played with great energy. They were the more aggressive team during that 10-13 minute stretch."
On SDSU's Kawhi Leonard:
"He's so big and so physical. He can make jump shots, he's really hard to beat."
On what advice he gave to the team after the game:
"We have to put it behind us and get ready for the big game on Saturday. We have had some tough luck. We have to learn from it and get ready for Saturday."
On being short-handed:
"We were obviously short-handed without JayDee (Luster) and Desmar (Jackson). That's why I rested Adam (Waddell) in the second half because his knees were really sore and so were his ankles. We were very short-handed against a very good team."
