SAN DIEGO - San Diego State forward Kawhi Leonard was named to FoxSports.com's all-freshman team as chosen by Jeff Goodman earlier this week. Goodman, who is the FoxSports.com's senior college basketball writer, selected his all-freshman team based on what has happened up to this point in the college basketball season.
The Riverside, Calif., native landed on the second team along with Derrick Favors of Georgia Tech, Hassan Whiteside of Hawai'i, Xavier Henry of Kansas and Matthew Dellavedova of Saint Mary's. Goodman's first team, meanwhile, consisted of Gonzaga's Elias Harris, Arizona's Derrick Williams, Kentucky's DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall, and Texas' Avery Bradley.
Leonard currently leads the Aztecs in scoring (11.9) and rebounding (9.5) and is among the team leaders in assists (42; 4th), blocks (13; 3rd) and steals (29; 3rd). The preseason Mountain West Conference freshman of the year also has 10 double-doubles to his credit, which matches the school's all-time freshman mark set by Michael Cage in 1981.
In the Mountain West, Leonard is the league's top overall and offensive rebounder (3.6), while ranking third in defensive rebounding (5.8). The 6-7 first-year player also is 11th in scoring, ninth in field-goal percentage (.457), 8th in minutes (30.7) and 10th in steals (1.3).
Leonard and San Diego State returns to the floor on Saturday when they pay New Mexico and The Pit a visit. The 15th/23rd-ranked Lobos are 20-3 on the season and 6-2 in the MWC, just one game ahead of the Aztecs (16-6; 5-3 MWC), who have won three of the last four times they have played on Bob King Court. Game time is set for 3 p.m. PT and can be seen nationally on The Mtn. and in the San Diego market on Channel 4 San Diego.
