GREELEY, Colo. - The San Diego State swimming and diving team rebounded from its loss at Wyoming on Friday to post a 125-108 victory over Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon in Greeley, Colo. The Aztecs captured all nine of the individual swimming events plus both relays with eight different SDSU swimmers finishing first in those nine events. With the meet firmly under control, SDSU elected to not score points in any of the final four events as the win allowed it to improve to 12-3 on the season.
San Diego State opened the meet by sweeping the 200 medley relay. The team of Brooke Vessey, Katelyn Weddle, Emilee Jennings and Stephanie Koch finished first in 1:49.44. Second place went to the quartet of Elena Karpeeva, Jessica Morrill, Allison Hall and Allison Stuhr (1:53.95) while third place went to Kelsy Diener, Nino Metsar, Kyla Power and Shelley Perkins (1:54.77).
The Aztecs lone double winner in the individual races was Stephanie Koch. The freshman from Boone, Iowa, grabbed first place in both the 50 free in 24.16 and the 50 butterfly in 26.67.
Meghan Zimmer took the honors in the 1000 freestyle in 10:35.38 followed by fellow frosh Melanie Garibaldi's victory in the 200 freestyle in 1:54.89. After Koch's win in the 50 free it was senior Elena Karpeeva grabbing top spot in the 100 individual medley (1:01.86).
The Aztecs other first-pace marks came courtesy of Allison Stuhr in the 50 back (28.69), Kelsey Diener in he 500 freestyle (5:13.27) and Katelyn Weddle in the 50 breaststroke (29.53).
SDSU also made a fine showing in the diving competition, which was conducted in Colorado Springs as part of day two of the Air Force Diving Invitational. Freshman Rafaella Suarez, appearing in just her second meet since arriving from Mt. San Antonio College at the semester break, finished second in the one-meter and third in the three-meter springboards with scores 233.30 and 219.45 respectively. Fellow freshman Aina Eill took second in the 3-meter diving with a mark of 224.30.
The Aztecs capped off the meet by turning in the top time in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Emilee Jennings, Tarin Corwin, Radovic and Zimmer went 1:38.64.
San Diego State will conclude its 2009-10 regular season by hosting a double dual meet against the University of San Diego and Northern Arizona next Saturday, Feb. 6, at 1:00 p.m. at the Aztec Aquaplex.
