It's a Battle Between Upper-Division Mountain West Conference Teams on Saturday when San Diego State Travels to Colorado State
The first of two Saturday games in the Mountain West Conference takes place in Fort Collins, Colo., where San Diego State (14-6; 3-3 MWC) plays at Colorado State (12-8; 3-3 MWC). Game time is set for 4:02 p.m. MT (3:02 p.m. PT) at Moby Arena.
The game will be televised nationally by The Mtn. (San Diego Cox Cable channel 320, DirecTV channel 616, Orange County Cox Cable channel 265, Las Vegas Cox Cable channel 334), with Rich Cellini and Blaine Fowler on the call, and will be available in the San Diego market on Channel 4 San Diego. The game can also be heard on AM 600 KOGO with Ted Leitner providing the description.
San Diego State and Colorado State are a part of a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference. The Aztecs and Rams are just a game back of second place in the loss column and two back of the conference leader, 12th/10th-ranked Brigham Young.
The Aztecs have not played since last Saturday when San Diego State suffered a 71-69 setback to then 14th/13th-ranked BYU at Viejas Arena. SDSU fell behind by 12 points midway through the first half, trailed by one point at intermission and rallied to take a 50-45 lead with 11:07 to play. The Cougars, however, responded with a 15-0 run to take the lead for good. Trailing by nine points with under three minutes to play, San Diego State made a frantic rally, scoring six straight points as part of a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to one point before falling to the Cougars.
Although the Aztecs suffered the loss, the two-point margin of victory was the smallest for Brigham Young during its 15-game winning streak (that streak was broken Wednesday night at New Mexico).
Freshman Kawhi Leonard posted his ninth double-double of the season with a team-high 16 points and game-high 11 rebounds. Junior guard D.J. Gay added 12 points and freshman guard Chase Tapley connected on a career-high three three-point field goals en route to 11 points.
The loss was the first at home for San Diego State this season and snapped the team's 14-game home court winning streak dating back to last season.
Now, the Aztecs will try for a bounce back win at Colorado State. Only once in the last 31 games has San Diego State dropped consecutive games and the Aztecs own a 16-4 (80.0 percent) record in their last 20 games following a loss.
Colorado State, which improved to 9-1 at home this season, defeated TCU, 63-57, on Wednesday night at Moby Arena. Greg Smith led the way with 15 points off the bench and Andy Ogide added 14 points and 10 boards.
This is the 64th meeting between the teams, with Colorado State owning a 35-28 advantage. In Fort Collins, CSU has won 22 of 29 all-time meetings. The Aztecs are experiencing their most successful run in the series, having won four straight (swept the series in 2008 and 2009) and nine of the last 10 encounters. SDSU has not dropped a regular-season game to CSU since Feb. 19, 2005.
