SAN DIEGO - San Diego State, which defeated UC Riverside, 6-1, earlier in the day, returned to Aztec Tennis Center in the afternoon and shutout Cal State Fullerton, 7-0. The 42nd-ranked Aztecs improve to 2-0 with the victory, while the Titans drop to 0-2.
For the second straight match, SDSU swept through doubles with relative ease. Alicia Aguilar and Emma Cioffi made quick work of Jerusha Cruz and Karina Akhmedova by winning 8-0 at No. 3 doubles. Soon thereafter, Roxanne Ellison and Sierra Ellison nearly completed a flawless match by trumping Malorie de la Cruz and Monica Rodriguez, 8-1, at No. 2. Then at first doubles, Julia Trunk and Julia Wais posted an 8-4 victory over Erin Wiesener and Tiffany Mai to finalize the sweep.
In singles, the Aztecs were just as dangerous as they were in doubles, winning all six matches in straight-sets fashion.
At No. 6, Naseem Eslami picked up her first win of 2010 by downing Lani Agsalud, 6-0, 6-0, and was soon joined in the clubhouse by Sierra Ellison, who beat Akhmedova, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 5.
With San Diego State needing just one team point to clinch the dual-match win, Wais came through in the clutch with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Cruz. Later, Aguilar beat Rodriguez, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 2, Trunk posted a win over Mai, 6-3, 6-3, at first singles, and Olivia Colman emerged victorious at No. 4 with her 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Cruz.
San Diego State improves to 24-0 all time vs. the Titans and has swept UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton on opening day the last six seasons.
The Aztecs return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 30, when they play host to No. 57 UC Irvine. Doubles action is slated to begin at noon PT.
