SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior Andre Feliz won a pair of singles matches and teamed up with junior Tim Schulz van Endert to win a doubles match Friday on the first day of the National Collegiate Tennis Competition in Palm Springs, Calif. This is the first event of the 2010 calendar year for the Aztec men.
Feliz downed Stuart Keplar of Pepperdine, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 32 and knocked off teammate and the tournament's seventh-seeded player, Achim Ceban, 7-6 (0), 6-1 in the round of 16 on Friday.
In all, three San Diego State players won their opening round singles match. Feliz, Ceban, who advanced when his opponent withdrew, and Schulz van Endert rallied to defeat Pepperdine's Hugh Clark in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles action, the Aztecs had two of their three teams remain alive in the main draw. In addition to Feliz and Schulz van Endert winning 8-2 over Taylor Patrick and Rhyne Williams of Tennessee, Ceban and Juan Gomez paired up to post an 8-1 victory over Pepperdine's Stuart Keplar and Alex Moreno.
The event continues Saturday and concludes on Sunday.
