SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior guard Jené Morris (San Francisco, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Morris logged back-to-back 20-point scoring games in leading the Aztecs to a 2-0 record to open the 2010 MWC season, averaging a league-best 23.5 points per outing.
The preseason conference player of the year, Morris scored 13 of the team's 25 first-half points at New Mexico on Wednesday. She finished with 25 points on 10-of-17 shooting (58.8 percent), posted three of the Aztecs' nine steals, contributed five assists and was a perfect 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.
Three days later, Morris had another outstanding first half vs. Wyoming, scoring 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including four 3-pointers on five attempts. She ended the afternoon with 22 points and also tied for the team lead with five assists.
On the week, she made 54.3 percent of her field-goal attempts, recorded five 3-pointers and added 10 assists and four steals.
It is the sixth career MWC award for Morris and she is the second Aztec to be honored by the conference in 2009-10, joining classmate Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.).
San Diego State entertains another conference foe UNLV on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Viejas Arena.
