SAN DIEGO - San Diego State junior wide receiver Doug Deakin was nominated for the Third Annual College Football Rudy Awards, which honors student-athletes who demonstrate excellent character, contribution and commitment as members of their collegiate football teams.
Deakin walked on at SDSU in 2007 and participated in spring drills as a defensive back. He was moved to wide receiver and although he did not see action, was an inspiration as a player. In 2009 Deakin earned a role on special teams and played in 11 games. He earned the 2008 President's Award for Highest Standards of Academic and Athletic Excellence and has been recognized as a SDSU Scholar-Athlete.
"We established this award as a special way to honor and recognize college football players for the size of their hearts instead of the enormity of their stats," said Rudy Ruettiger, co-founder of The Rudy Foundation.
Three Rudy Awards finalists will be chosen by the Selection Committee as well as through fan voting. The players will be honored at a breakfast at the American Football Coaches Convention in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 11, 2010.
