ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands - The San Diego State women's basketball team got off to a slow start for the second consecutive day, but this time was unable to battle back, falling to No. 20/17 Oklahoma, 87-48, Friday at the 2009 Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The Aztecs dropped their second straight game to a ranked foe to move to 3-2 this season, while the Sooners improved to 4-1, including a 2-0 mark at the tournament.
Junior Paris Johnson (San Diego, Calif.) was the only Aztec player in double-figure points, posting 10 to go with a team game-high six rebounds. Senior Jené Morris (San Francisco, Calif.) fell two points short of hitting the 1,000-career mark at SDSU, going 4-for-11 from the field for eight points in only 25 minutes of action. Junior Coco Davis (Sacramento, Calif.) had a team-best four assists and, along with junior Jessika Bradley (Sacramento, Calif.), had five rebounds.
San Diego State got the first bucket of the afternoon on a Johnson lay-up in the paint, but Oklahoma tied it less than a minute later on a jumper by Abi Olajuwon. The game was tied once more at four apiece, until the Sooners began to pull away, going on a 14-4 run to jump ahead by 10 at 18-8.
After a Morris lay-up to get to win eight, Oklahoma continued to execute on offense and defense, scoring nine unanswered points and keeping SDSU to only three points in the final 10 minutes of the first half to head into the locker room up by 32 at 47-15.
Out of the break, the Sooners scored the first basket, but Johnson tallied the game's next six points on her own and another Morris lay-up shrunk the deficit to 26 at 49-23. The 26 points would be as close as the Aztecs got in the second half, as Oklahoma eventually came away with the 87-48 win.
San Diego State ended the game shooting only 28.6 percent from the field, including 18.5 percent in the first half, while Oklahoma shot 56.9 percent. The Aztecs were outrebounded for the first time in 2009-10, and logged only a single steal.
All five Sooner starters posted double-figures in points, including leading scorer Amanda Thompson, who had 18 points on 8-for-14 shooting.
The Aztecs look to end the 2009 Paradise Jam on a high note, as they round out the tournament with a Saturday contest against South Carolina at 10:15 a.m. PT, at the University of the Virgin Islands' Sports and Fitness Center.
