The San Diego State men's golf team owns a seven-stroke lead and has three golfers under par after the opening round Monday of the 2009 Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational in Kahuku, Hawaii.

The 29th-ranked Aztecs are among 11 men's teams playing the opening two rounds on the resort's par-72, 7,218-yard Arnold Palmer Course. SDSU fired a 10-under 278 on the first 18 holes to hold a seven-stroke advantage over second place Long Beach State (285), which is the only other school under par. The Aztecs were 10 strokes better than host Hawai'i (288) and 12 ahead of ninth-ranked Illinois (290).

Junior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), who placed second in the team's most recent tournament three weeks ago, picked up right where he left off, posting a day one effort of 5-under 67, including seven birdies with five on the front nine. Teammate sophomore Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) trails Carlsson by just one stroke and is in second place with a season-low 68, bolstered by a 4-under performance on the back nine. Aztec Andrew Cooley (New Haw, England) is one of six golfers tied for third place with a 2-under 70, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 ninth hole.

SDSU true freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England), who fired a 73, and sophomore Tyler Morris (Encinitas, Calif.), who carded an 81, round out the group in 22nd and 57th place, respectively.

The Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational continues Tuesday with the second of three rounds, starting with tee times ranging from approximately 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. HT for both the men's and women's fields. Live stats are available on goaztecs.com, as well as golfstat.com.
